![]() Artist's Statement: I am a North Carolina fiber artist who uses layering of textiles and embellishments to convey impressions of nature. My fiber work, informed by the traditions of quilting and botanical illustrating, combines passions for nature, texture, color and women's work as art. I work with fabric because I love it: the look of it, the feel of it, and its historical meanings of comfort and security. I love the way the machine quilt line creates both line and texture as bas relief sculpture. Recent work incorporates hand embroidery for enrichment and details. My current series Seed Play began mid 2008 and focuses on tree seeds and fruits, as metaphors for life’s riches. Working directly from collected seed specimens, designs are based on research and sketching to clarify what is architecturally unique for each species. What differentiates one tree species' seeds from another? Using the uniqueness of tree seeds as metaphor for all of life, I strive to illustrate that each individual is unique and wonderful by focusing with admiration and care on a part of the tree that is often overlooked. Biography: Nancy G. Cook's art quilts have a graphic quality and at the same time, provide an experience of intimacy. Cook's textile art features impressions of nature through layered and embellished fabrics; her fabric choices vary from purchased hand dyed silk and cottons to synthetic velour. Her quilting often creates a variation of low relief sculpture. Her color palette varies from intense to minimal as the subject matter warrants. In addition to creating one of a kind textile art, Cook lectures, teaches workshops and does commission work. She has been working in this medium since 1994, retiring from working in industrial /organizational psychology to work full time in art in 2001. Her work is in numerous private and public collections throughout the USA. Four galleries have selected her work for solo shows in Charlotte, Chapel Hill and Raleigh NC and in Kenosha WI. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe and she has won numerous awards. Southern Hospitality will be in the traveling exhibition SAQA Journeys: Art Meets Science opening in Birmingham England in August 2010. Her work can be seen at Barnes Studios, Charlotte, NC. Her art textiles have been published in magazines and books, including a piece on the cover of Creative Quilting: The Journal Quilt Project in 2006. Other works were published in SAQA Portfolios 13 - 16. American Quilter Magazine published her article: Techniques for 3 Dimensional Appliqué featuring three of her quilts and a variety of dimensional appliqué techniques in the Spring 2004 issue. Two of her quilts can be seen in 500 Art Quilts: An Inspiring Collection of Contemporary Work, Karey Patterson Bresenhan, editor, Lark Books, 2010. Cook received a Regional Artist Grant from the Arts and Science Councils of Charlotte, Mecklenburg and surrounding counties to attend a Master Class in 2009. She was a 2004 Summer Affiliate Artist at the McColl Center for Visual Arts. Also in 2004 and again in 2007, she was the recipient of the Charlotte Quilters' Guild Education Grant. She was given the Award of Excellence at the 2004 Art and Soul of Quilting, Anderson Arts Center, Kenosha, WI. In 2003, she received a Regional Artist Project Grant from the Arts and Science Councils of Charlotte, Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. Resume: Public and Corporate Collections:
